This blog began in 2009, and it's transformed through different styles over the years. I've become a reviewer for the Young Adult Books Central (YABC) and posts for those books have their own look. I've also been a judge for Cybils.com since 2010 to determine the best books of the year in the category of elementary/middle-grade speculative fiction. You'll see reviews for these top books in some of my January posts from the past.
This book is part of series, and I gave it a rating of four out of five. Marty and his friends, Grace and Luther, are joining an expedition to capture a giant squid and bring it back to display at an aquarium. The squid will be worth millions, since none of them are in captivity. However, Grace's grandfather tries to stop the expedition, because he's an evil man and wants to kill the expedition's leader, her father. He also wants the two dinosaur eggs that are hatching on the ship. The grandfather has a spy or two on the ship, and they are causing problems, including the attempted murder of Marty. The grandfather has assembled a force to attack the expedition ship, and the small group of security guards may not be enough to stop them. The plot has a number of things happening that keep the action moving. The search for the giant squid becomes a minor plot due to the conflict with the grandfather and the hatching of the dinosaur eggs. There are some cool inventions used during the story such as flying robots bugs and a unique submarine that can travel deeper under the ocean than any other ship. There are several characters in disguise to keep readers guessing about who to trust. The plot builds up to an exciting climax, but the resolution leads right into the next book in the series.
