Readers will immediately notice the setting is not on Earth. The training base sits on a huge, drifting, flat landmass, surrounded by lethal plants and creatures. Brinx is the main character, and he is one of many hybrids being trained and tested at the base. Many different hybrid groups exist, and they generally don't get along with one another. Brinx and his best friend, Jang, are Featherbones, able to jump abnormally high and far due to polarizing material that resists gravity. All of the hybrids are blends of genetic material from around the universe, so the characters feature a myriad of colors and shapes.
Non-stop action will keep thrill-seekers captivated, as the hybrids struggle for survival. Brinx and others barely survive dangers in the final test, qualifying them to leave Base Lab 9. They assume they’ll be safe during their trip to Havenport, the Graduation Center, but the transport’s crash quickly smashes those feelings. Upon leaving the wreckage, the survivors are immediately attacked by bloodthirsty, vicious plants. These giant vines are relentless predators, so Brinx and the others scramble to higher ground. Are they safe there? No, scavengers and larger Shankwyrms take over the hunt and continue pursuing them. The story barely gives readers a chance to catch their breath before moving on to the next threat. The natural threats continue throughout the book.
The character interactions are entertaining and ever-changing. Sig is the best climber, but his fun-loving personality irritates Goz. Jang would probably enjoy Sig. Goz is the strongest and most skilled warrior, and Brinx may, or may not, be attracted to her. Rigel is the group’s weakest member. His knowledge is invaluable, and his eyes surprise the other characters.
What didn’t work as well:
Some readers may find it difficult to make mental images of the characters due to their genetics. Brinx has webbed hands, another character is blue, and another has six fingers on each limb. It helps that the cast of characters gets whittled down to five. Also, the early part of the story stresses the division between different types of hybrids, but the expected conflict between characters after the crash is minimal.
The final verdict:
The plot begins as a survival story, but it transforms into much more when Brinx and his friends discover a hidden base. I recommend you give it a shot.
